BA EDUCATION AND SOCIAL SERVICES

Intro to the course:

This innovative course is delivered in partnership with the University of Strathclyde. It is ideal for you if you are enthusiastic about working as part of a team to support the delivery of integrated care in educational and social service settings.  

On successful completion of the Diploma with the College, you can move directly to the third year of the BA (Honours) programme at the University of Strathclyde. 

This can lead to various opportunities for employment and further study within social care, health care and educational environments. 

Who is the course for?

This course is aimed at those who wish to progress to study at university and that have an interest for integrated care services.

What will I study?

Three days each week in college will give you the opportunity to undertake a range of subjects focusing on learning about these integrated services and the skills necessary to undertake professional roles.

The units you will study as part of the Diploma/BA are:

• academic literacy
• the societal context of professional roles
• introduction to integrated services
• how people develop and learn
• workplace practice
• being professional - working collaboratively

There will be a four-week full time placement as part of the course to observe how services are moving towards integrated provision.

A PVG from disclosure Scotland will be required for this course.

Next step course options

Successful completion of the Diploma allow progression to the University of Strathclyde to complete the BA Education and Social Services. After which you may choose to continue with an application for postgraduate study in courses such as:

• primary education
• community development and learning
• social work
• counselling
• additional support needs
• mental health
• autism
• career guidance
• criminology and housing

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed via a variety of methods including essays, assignments and presentations.

There is a diverse range of employment opportunities after completing the BA including support workers in mental health, addictions, homelessness, children’s services, learning disability, crisis services, police, family and education settings.

What are the entry requirements?

HNC in a related subject which offers a mandatory placement such as:

• social services
• childhood practice
• additional support needs
• health care practice
• working in communities and housing
• occupational therapy

Submission of a Personal Learning Statement, participation at an information session and skills assessment  forms part of the selection criteria.

All qualifications should have been achieved in the previous five years, unless you have a noted qualification and significant relevant workplace experience

You will require relevant experience of the workplace, placement will count towards this

What are the interview arrangements?

You must complete a personal learning statement. Your statement will be read by a member of SLC staff and Strathclyde University staff.  If your statement is satisfactory and meets the requirements, you will be offered a conditional offer subject to criminal convictions check, PVG and reference.
