This course is for those wanting to make a start in the health and social care profession. and will allow you to progress on to HNC study.You will cover areas such as care, communication, first aid, mental health and caring for people with dementia. There is also the opportunity for a work placement.

Who is the course for?

This course is ideal for anyone wanting to start a career in health and social care. It will suit school leavers or those looking to change career or progress into the industry.

What will I study?

You'll gain skills and knowledge for a career in the care sector such as nursing homes, residential homes, and resource centres for people with learning disabilities. You'll learn about who needs care, provision available and the roles and responsibilities of the care worker. You'll learn through groupwork, lectures, industry visits and guest speakers.

What are the entry requirements?

One or more of the following:

  • three National 5 awards or three Standard Grades at Credit level 1 or 2, one of which must be English or
  • successful completion of Intermediate 2 or National 5 care programme
  • over 16 at the start of the course
  • one satisfactory reference
  • successful performance on entry test
  • Disclosure Scotland PVG check 
  • acceptance may depend on interview
