Part-qualified and newly qualified accountants are Scotland's most sought-after employees, according to recent research from Hays. The average salary for an accountant in Scotland is £37,500. This two year HND course offers a direct route to a degree programme taught on our campus in partnership with the University of the West of Scotland. This course gives you skills, theory and an insight into the industry, and sets you on the path to a career in accounting and finance.

Who is the course for?

This course is ideal for anyone wanting to develop a career in Accountancy. It will suit school leavers or those looking to change career or progress into the industry.

What will I study?

You will gain the skills and knowledge required for working within an accounting environment or if progressing to the BAcc Accounting. You will learn about financial accounting and recording financial information. 

You'll learn through work placement, group work, lectures, industry visits and guest speakers.

  • Third year entry to the BAcc Accounting Degree at South Lanarkshire College in partnership with the University of the West of Scotland 
  • Third year entry into an Accounting Degree at another Scottish University

How will I be assessed?

Ongoing assessment through a range of practical activities, observations, candidate folios, self-evaluation, presentations, planning and review using secure SQA assessment support packs. Towards the end of the HNC or the first year of the HND you will complete a graded unit examination. A project based Graded Unit will be undertaken during the 2nd year of the HND.

There is  a demand for accountants in many different sectors, and this course will help you on your way towards a professional qualification. You can study at South Lanarkshire College up to degree-level under our partnership agreement with the University of the West of Scotland. 

This is a popular route to degree-level study with the support of a college learning environment and you will be taught by our multi-talented industry experts and Chartered Accountants.  You will gain experience through the work placement module, from visits to local Accounting firms and from a variety of guest speakers.

Where can this course lead?

This course is aimed at those wishing to gain employment, or who are currently employed, in roles such as Accounts Assistant, Trainee Accountant, Finance Assistant, Book-Keeper or Financial Administrator.

What are the entry requirements?

Any of the following:

  • One relevant Higher
  • Relevant NQ/NPA qualifications at SCQF Level 6, including Foundation Apprenticeship 
  • Equivalent vocational qualifications from other awarding bodies
  • Relevant work experience with satisfactory reference

You will also need:

  • a good level of digital literacy
  • a genuine interest in accounting

If your first language is not English, it is recommended that you possess English for Speakers of Other languages (ESOL) at SCQF level 5 or an overall score of 5.5 in IELT

Direct entry to year 2 of the HND course requires an HNC in Accounting with a minimum of 14 credits, a satisfactory reference and an A or B in the Graded unit.

You will be invited to attend an informal interview and group information/enrolment session.
