NC HORTICULTURE

Intro to the course:

This course introduces learners to the breadth of the horticultural industry and the areas of specialism within a diverse and rewarding industry.  As well as developing the practical skills required, it will introduce a range of disciplines found within horticulture, supported by relevant and up to date knowledge and understanding.

We would welcome applicants whose first language is not English.

Who is the course for?

This course is suitable for a wide range of learners including:

• school leavers
• adult returners to education
• individuals in employment who wish to enhance their career prospects
• people who wish to take their first steps into the industry

What will I study?

You'll learn the practical skills and knowledge for working in the horticulture industry including horticulture practices, maintaining green spaces, soft and hard landscaping, plant growth and development, plant protection and soil management. You'll learn through groupwork, lectures, industry visits and guest speakers.

There is increasing demand for gardeners, landscapers and horticulturists. Job vacancies have risen by 4% in the sector over the past ten years.  You'll gain skills and practical experience in our purpose-built on-campus outdoor and indoor gardens and facilities. You'll get the chance to help with college and other events, and community projects. You'll get the best possible opportunities to progress in your career in horticulture whether that is into employment or articulating onto HNC Horticulture.

Where can this course lead?

This course leads to jobs such as: 

• landscape service provider 
• garden centre employee
• gardener in a private garden or estate 
• gardener in a public garden, local authority, community garden
• greenkeeper in a golf course or football stadium 
• nursery/grower/propagator role

What are the entry requirements?

One or more of the following: 

• National 4 qualification preferably Communication and Numeracy
• equivalent recognised qualification 
• relevant work experience
• equivalent recognised qualification
• relevant industry experience, may require an interview to discuss experience
• if English is not your first language, an interview to support your application may be beneficial

What are the interview arrangements?

Offers made will be based on your application.  Those who do not meet the minimum entry requirements will be invited for an individual interview.

We have various employer and Industry links and recently re-developed our horticulture facilities including:

• a horticulture teaching lab with indoor growing facilities and IT resources for learning, teaching and research
• a purpose-built outdoor horticulture teaching facility with allotments, polytunnel, potting shed and an outdoor classroom
• a well equipped science lab with access to the most up to date equipment and machinery
