The HND in Counselling is a full time course that, on completion, enables professional registration as a Counsellor with BACP. This is a highly demanding and competitive course that requires attendance in college, participation in supervised practice and self-directed study.

Direct entry (at the discretion of the university) into third year of a BA (Hons) degree in a related subject

How will I be assessed?

Supervised practice, written assignments and a graded unit.

You will be required to gain Student Membership of BACP prior to beginning direct practice and be covered by an appropriate Indemnity Insurance policy.  A PVG Disclosure will be required.  Personal therapy is recommended, but is not a mandatory requirement. 

You must attend a minimum of 400 taught hours and 100 hours of client contact to be eligible for progressing to the BACP CoP at the end of the course. You are required to source your own counselling placement and supervision.

What are the entry requirements?

Entry requirements (minimum): 

You must have successfully passed HNC Counselling with

  • 15 credits 
  • a Grade A in your HNC Graded Unit 
  • minimum of 90% attendance 
  • excellent references from your course tutor and one other professional referee 
  • successful interview - including group exercise, written piece, individual interview  
  • evidence of personal development or volunteering in a counselling service  
  • Disclosure Scotland PVG check

What are the interview arrangements?

Interview on campus with the lecturing team. This will include a group exercise, written task and individual interview.
