ABOUT SOUTH LANARKSHIRE COLLEGE AND THE SOUTH LANARKSHIRE ENERGY ACADEMY
South Lanarkshire College has been an active partner in the delivery of the Energy Academy since its inception in 2010. The College has worked hand-in-hand with employers who have invested heavily in equipment and new technologies to provide industry focussed state-of-the-art facilities. The College has responded specifically to a range of expanding industry needs that focussed on new regulations. The College was able to develop new training including installation and maintenance of high efficiency boilers and micro renewables equipment (solar and photovoltaic panels), biomass boilers, mechanical air vents, ground and air-source heat pumps. South Lanarkshire College is the only one of two Colleges in the UK to deliver a Structural Timber Association Award in Timber Frame Erection, South Lanarkshire College, and is the only educational establishment in the United Kingdom approved to certificate this qualification.
The College constantly updates its workshops and equipment to respond to new technologies demanded and driven by industry. It has invested in state-of-the-art facilities supported by manufacturers of high efficiency boilers and micro renewable energy equipment keen to promote the latest technology in their specialism and updating it on a continual basis to ensure students can work on the most advanced technology. Students are able to see for themselves prime examples of these new technologies in our facilities: the low carbon house “Aurora” and a new “positive” extension.
Smart Meter Installation
South Lanarkshire College is currently delivering smart meter installation in response to the Government’s agenda to get 54 million smart meters installed by 2020 across the UK. Utility companies are currently looking to employ over 700 people into sustainable employment between 2016 and 2020 across Scotland.
The College works closely with key utility companies across Scotland to meet the skills gap and skills shortages in the industry.
Timber Frame Construction
Timber frame erection is an expanding construction technique that already features highly in the new generation of buildings in the UK. Working hand in hand with the Structural Timber Association, South Lanarkshire College is the only educational establishment in the United Kingdom approved to certificate the Structural Timber Association Award in Timber Frame Erection.
Employers have been using the College as a recruitment hub for many years. Some of them only using South Lanarkshire College to recruit their new staff.
Micro Renewable Energy
South Lanarkshire has been a leader in the field of micro renewable energy development and installation. Its training facilities are second to none as it has led the way in investing in new facilities to support skills and development for sustainability in the construction sector. Its commitment to providing an innovating learning environment where students can see the technologies in action has won the College numerous UK wide awards, including the Green Gown Award. It has also built a new classroom extension with outstanding sustainability credentials. This new capital development is used as a teaching tool for students who are able to see the leading sustainable building structure and micro-renewable technologies being used.
We are looking forward to deliver rural labour market interventions on behalf of South Lanarkshire Council – assisting new potential recruits as well as candidates with previous experience to access job opportunities within the energy/utility sector and its supply chain.
