Accounting and finance

Why should I study accounting and finance?

Accountants are required in every industry. Business owners and investors rely on their knowledge and skills for analysing results and forecasting.

According to research from Hays in 2020, part-qualified and newly qualified accountants are Scotland’s most sought-after employees. The average salary for an accountant in Scotland is £37,500, with those working in accounting and finance often progressing to much higher salaries after experience.

Within your role you would make sure the business you work for keeps track of all its money, pays its bills and is paid by its customers.  Tasks would include preparing regular financial statements and accounts, such as profit and loss accounts, monitoring spending, analysing costs and budgets, analysing the company’s financial performance and forecasting.

What jobs might it lead to?

You can get jobs such as accounts assistant, trainee accountant, finance assistant, book-keeper, financial administrator, investment analyst, investment banker or financial adviser.
