HORTICULTURE (Level 5) (Full-time) (January)

Course Outline:

This course provides the opportunity to develop a wide range of practical skills, working safely and a good all-round knowledge and understanding of the various specialist areas of horticulture.

Core units include:

  • Basic botany
  • Plant identification
  • Plant nutrition
  • Plant husbandry: common disorder
  • Soils and growing media in horticulture
  • Planting and maintenance
  • Horticulture machinery: operation and maintenance

Optional units may include:

  • Plant display
  • Soft landscaping: trees and shrubs
  • Soft landscaping: herbaceous perennials
  • Plant production from seed
  • Vegetative propagation
  • Horticultural therapy
  • Laying slabs and paving: An Introduction
  • Personal development: self and work
  • Enterprise activity
  • Work placement

This course will start in January 2022.

Education Progression:

HNC/D in Horticulture

Entry Requirements:

  • NC Horticulture at SCQF Level 4, experience within a relevant horticultural field, or equivalent National 4 qualification
  • Communication and Numeracy qualifications, preferably at National 4 level
  • Applicants without formal qualifications can expect to undertake core skills testing at interview
  • A PVG will be required to allow access to on-site training opportunities which will be undertaken as an integral part of this course (e.g. working with NHS and educational partners).
  • Successful performance at interview including a written task and a group activity.

Career Progression:

Possible employment with local authorities, nurseries, landscapers, contractors.

  • We have recently re-developed our horticulture facilities including:
  • A horticulture teaching lab with indoor growing facilities and IT resources for learning, teaching and research
  • A purpose-built outdoor horticulture teaching facility with allotments, polytunnel, potting shed and an outdoor classroom
  • A well-equipped science lab
  • Access to the most up to date equipment and machinery
  • We have various employer and Industry links. We currently work with a wide range of employers and partners giving student opportunities for placements and project work leading, in some cases to employment. These include grounds maintenance and work with NHS partners.
