Course Outline:

Top photographers in Scotland earn upwards of £600 a day. It’s estimated that 7,800 jobs will need to be replaced or created between 2020 and 2023 in the creative industries and photography in Scotland, with the need for good quality images for advertising and content. This course will give you the skills to be a successful photographer. The course combines the traditional skills of image making with those needed to work in an ever-changing digital environment.

This course will start in August 2022.

Education Progression:

  • Direct entry into the second year of the HND Photography if you achieve an A/B in Graded Unit 1.

HNC Photography

Entry Requirements:

One or more of the following:

  •  1 Higher plus 3 National 5 award
  • Relevant group of SQA National Qualifications at SCQF level
  • Foundation apprenticeship in a relevant subject
  • Equivalent recognised qualification
  • Relevant current work experience
  • A keen interest in the subject area
  • Portfolio of recent work
  • Own or have the use of a DSLR camera for duration of course

If English is not your first language, ESOL at an appropriate level or IELTS or equivalent with an entry score of 5.5 or above

This course leads to opportunities such as working in a studio to scenic location photography. Many photographers set up their own businesses.

What will I study?

You’ll learn about photography styles and gain skills for working in the sector. You’ll learn through work placement, groupwork, lectures, industry visits and guest speakers.

How will I be assessed?

Ongoing assessment through a range of practical activities, candidate folios, self-evaluation, planning and review using secure SQA assessment support packs. Open-book project-based graded unit assessment.

Group information session followed by one-to-one interview.
