HNC Complementary Therapies


This course is aimed at those interested in working with complementary health therapies.  It requires a mature attitude to work due to a high level of study and self- directed research throughout the programme.  Good communication and organisational skills are essential.  A large part of this programme is of a practical nature and students will be expected to practise their treatments on their peers and on members of the public. Candidates are also expected to take part in work experience within a professional environment.

Core units include:

Complementary therapy: professional issues and practice
Complementary therapy: health and safety legislation
Body massage
Perspectives of health
Complementary therapies: Graded Unit 1
Human anatomy and physiology for beauty and complementary therapy
Complementary therapies: clinic practice

Optional units may include:

Research and methodology or
Stress management
Aromatherapy massage
Traditional head massage


• A minimum of 2 Highers one in English at C or above and preferably a Science subject or
• NC in Wellness Therapies/ Level 3 Beauty Therapy
• Appropriate life skills
• Maturity of approach is essential
• Students must be prepared to communicate and work with members of the public and to practise their skills with the peer group
• Successful performance at interview


HND Complementary Therapies


Successful students may find employment in the health care sector such as clinics or hospices, or within a spa setting, or they may work independently as Complementary Therapist.
