The One and Two Year Foundation Apprenticeship (FA) in Social Services Children and Young People is offered in S5 and S6, it aims to give you the opportunity to develop the knowledge, values, and skills, required to work with children and young people. This course is ideal for anyone who sees themselves working with children and young people in a caring or education setting. You will have the opportunity to undertake both an NPA and SVQ Level 2 units in Social Services (Children and Young People for which you will attend a work placement in a South Lanarkshire Council run early years establishment. 

Employment possibilities in this area include:- Working in early learning and childcare settings e.g. nurseries, out of school care, creches, Primary school teaching, Social Work (children and families), Child Psychology, Nursing and midwifery

 Learners currently in S5 and S6

What will I study?

• National Progression Award (NPA) in Social Services Children and Young People at SCQF Level 6
• Mandatory units from SVQ level 2 in social services children and young people SCQF level 6
• work based learning with an employer

Next step course options

Modern Apprenticeship: A student completing the Foundation Apprenticeship in Social Services (Children & Young People) could progress to a Modern Apprenticeship in Social Services (Children & Young People) SCQF level 7.

Further Education:  All Scottish further education colleges recognise the Foundation Apprenticeship in Social Services (Children & Young People) as an eligible qualification towards NC and HNC level courses, alongside other qualifications.

Higher Education: Scottish universities recognise the Foundation Apprenticeship in Social Services (Children & Young People) as an eligible qualification towards under-graduate degrees and graduate apprenticeship provision, alongside other qualifications. The experience gained through the framework looks excellent in UCAS applications to university.

How will I be assessed?

Assessments range from:

• SQA secure assessments which can be open-book, closed-book, reports, presentations, group work and observations
• will be directly observed in placement.

Where can this course lead?

Course attendance pattern

1 year course: 

Tuesday and Thursday 9.30 – 4.00

2 year course:

Year 1 – Tuesday and Thursday 1.30 – 4.00

Year 2 – Tuesday and Thursday 1.5 days per week

What are the entry requirements?

• Students must have gained National 5 English (A-C) by end of S4 
• Students must be studying a minimum of 1 or more Highers in S5.
• For students selecting 1 year course, Nat 5 English and 1 higher must be achieved before starting the FA
