South Lanarkshire Students Graduate| 04.10.10
South Lanarkshire College was a buzz of excitement on Monday 4 October as HNC/D students donned graduation gowns and took part in the annual graduation ceremony. Proud family members, friends and College staff looked on as the students were presented with their certificates by College Chairperson Jane McCartney at the ceremony held in the Hamilton Town House. Students of all ages gained awards in subjects as diverse as Accounting, Construction Practice, Hairdressing and Early Education and Childcare. Master Chefs of Great Britain Award 2010| 04.10.10
Five students from Hospitality in the Faculty of Business have been awarded ‘Diplomas’ and ‘Advanced Diplomas’ at a recent prize giving ceremony and lunch at the Crowne Plaza Hotel 5 * Resort, St James in London. Claire McEwan and Laura McFarlane were awarded the Advanced Diploma in Professional Cookery whilst Andrew Finnegan, Heather Simpson and Gillian Hanson picked up the Diploma in Professional Cookery.
To be considered for this prestigeous award students must have worked with a Master Chef for a minimum of 12 months for diploma level and a minimum of 24 months for advanced diploma. During this time they must demonstrate consistently the highest levels of craft and academic standards. Only then is their application considered for judging by the Master Chef panel who also assess their folio of academic achievement and professional proficiency.
Tutor and Master Chef David Auchie said ‘The students from South Lanarkshire College have once again been rewarded for their commitment, dedication and professionalism in Hospitality during session 2009-2010’. ‘I am extremely proud of all five students’. ‘To put their achievement into perspective South Lanarkshire College is the only college in the UK to have students selected and recognised for these awards year on year.

Jobserve Launch| 30.09.10
This week sees the launch of Jobcentre Plus’ Digital services week to promote Jobcentre Plus’ digital services and demonstrate the importance and value of online skills. To coincide with this South Lanarkshire College launched its in-house Jobcentre Action Points on Thursday 30 September 2010. The College Jobcentre Action points will be open to students and the general public Monday – Friday from 9 am to 4.30 pm and will feature lists of employers with vacancies available.
College Principal Stewart McKillop said of the launch “We are delighted to host the jobserve points in the College and provide access to recruitment for our current students and the wider community. Hosting the points reflects South Lanarkshire College’s continual commitment and enthusiasm to provide the best possible learning and employment opportunities to those served by the College"
Jobcentre Plus District Manager for Lanarkshire and East Dunbartonshire Stephen McConnachie said; "We are pleased to work in partnership with South Lanarkshire College. It is important that customers have access to the Internet to make the most of opportunities on offer. The access to Jobcentre Plus services in the College Advice Centre offers students as well as other customers, the opportunity of using digital services. A link to Direct Gov provides advice and information about employment, benefits, training and much more, and it’s Jobs and Skills Search gives jobseekers access to hundreds of thousands of vacancies and training opportunities.
South Lanarkshire College is the first College in Scotland to offer this service and with the recent news that unemployment in the East Kilbride and Strathaven area has soared by 536 per cent since 2008, and statistics now showing that Scotland’s unemployment rates are back to where they were in 1996, the launch of easily accessible Jobcentre points is great news for students and the general public who are seeking employment.
Skillbuild| 16.09.10
South Lanarkshire College was recently represented in the UK National Skillbuild finals at Coleg Menai in Wales by College Construction faculty students.Student Steven Butler took home a WorldSkills UK Silver medal, in the roof slating and tiling category while Kenny McAllister was awarded a WorldSkills UK Bronze medal, in
the plastering category. Sean Ferguson, took home a WorldSkills UK bronze medal, in the Painting and Decorating category. As one of the four finalists to share third place in the competition Sean received a WorldSkills UK medal. He was also presented with a Crown Trade Apprentice Decorator of the Year 2010 medal and a cheque for £250.
Steven Butler was also the winner of the Frank Eaton Award said: “It feels fantastic to have won a medal at the UK final of SkillBuild and to be named as one of the best construction
appretices in the country. The competition at this level is so fierce, so to come out on top and demonstrate the expert skill and experience I have attained is amazing".
College Information Evening| 24.08.10
South Lanarkshire College East Kilbride’s will host an information evening on Tuesday 24 August 2010 from 4.30 - 7 pm.The event will be a drop-in Information session for full-time and part-time courses commencing August 2010 and will be held at our state-of-the-art Campus in East Kilbride. Members of Faculty staff will be on hand to answer questions and give information and advice on full-time, part-time and infill study courses.

Partners Sign up for Climate Change| 29.06.10
On Tuesday 29 June 2010, South Lanarkshire Council's Community Planning Partners Joined Councillor Eddie McAvoy and Councillor Hamish Stewart, Chair of South Lanarkshire Sustainability Partnershipto sign up to the declaration at the College's Low Carbon House - 'Aurora'.

HND Beauty student Karen Johnstone, was announced as the winner of the The Young
Her reward a financial initial investment for her new business venture . Karen was awarded with the prize at the Young Enterprise Annual Awards Dinner which was held at Hampden Park on Wednesday 16 June.
Charity Walk| 14.06.10
On Monday 14 June, South Lanarkshire College Painting and Decorating year 1 students raised £1000 in aid of MacMillan Cancer Care by participating in a sponsored walk through the vast Achray Forest, Aberfoyle.
The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and were thrilled to raise so much for the worthy cause. Pictures of the successful students with their lecturers Brian Hannigan and Mark Haddow are included.
