College Entry Qualifications
The British Council in your own country can advise you on the equivalences between qualifications from different countries. The entry requirements for each course can be found in the Courses & Applications section and in the College prospectus. You can be sure that your application will be judged carefully by members of staff in Admissions and in the Department in which you wish to study.
All applicants must have competence in English language appropriate to the level of course selected. Generally an IELTS score of between 4.5 - 5 is required for Higher National level study. Most universities require an IELTS score above 5.5 for entry to degree level study and therefore English language classes are available for those who need to improve their score before progressing to university.
Scottish Qualificaitons
Scottish Qualifications are respected worldwide and South Lanarkshire College offers one and two year vocational courses leading to the following:
NQ - National Qualifications (one year)
HNC - Higher National Certificate (one year, often the first year of HND and equivalent to first year University)
HND- Higher National Diploma (two years, generally equivalent to second year University)
Because of the vocational nature of these courses, students leave College with a range of transferable skills that are sought by employers and by Higher Education Institutions. The HNC and HND qualifications provide students with recognised qualifications in vocational subjects and these, combined with a recognised qualification in English, would allow progression to University to study for a degree, entering at first, second or sometimes third year. Normally, students would require either a relevant NQ level certificate, SQA Higher certificate, or relevant work experience for entry to HNC or HND level study.
The NQ courses are vocational - at either introductory or intermediate level. Successful completion, along with achievement in English language, would provide a good foundation for students wishing to progress to HNC or HND level courses in the same vocational area.
Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework
Further information on the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework can be found on the Scottish Qualifications Authority website www.sqa.org.uk
In addition to SQA qualifications, the College offers qualifications from other awarding bodies as well as providing College certification for some non-accredited courses.
Entry to University
International Students who wish to progress to university, like all UK students, must apply through UCAS (Universities Centralised Admissions Service). The usual date for application for a university course through UCAS is the December before the course starts. However, particularly for International Students, later applications are also considered.
International students are normally expected to have an IELTS score of at least 5.5 for entry to university. Some universities or courses may have a requirement for a higher score.
South Lanarkshire College has many agreed progression routes with University of West of Scotland (UWS) and Glasgow Caledonian University, which allow entry to second or third year study. The exact progression route depends on individual level of achievement and course/subjects studied. Some courses have guaranteed places.
