Health & Safety Officer: Sharon McCarroll (Head of Facilities)The College fully recognises the importance of Health & Safety, and, as a minimum, will comply with all aspects of The Health & Safety at Work etc 1974, and all associated Regulations and Approved Codes of Practice. Our aim at all times is to ensure the safest possible working environment for all of our students, staff and visitors.
Every student has a responsibility to protect themselves and others from hazards resulting from work or behaviour. It is your duty to follow closely all advice and instruction given by lecturers or on official notices. You should not attempt to carry out work of a dangerous nature nor operate machines unless instructed to do so. These guidelines should be read in conjunction with the Student Code of Conduct and Student Charter.

Access to Computer Equipment, College Network and Internet
The code of conduct on computer and Internet use has been designed to protect both you and other users from inconvenience, loss, distress and possible disciplinary or criminal proceedings. All students must comply with the regulations on acceptable computer, network and Internet access. You will be issued with a copy of these regulations and will be required to sign to confirm that you have read, understood and will abide by the rules for computer and Internet access. The following are broad guidelines and should be read along with the code of conduct for computer use.You should
- always log on and log off
- keep a backup of your work
- leave your workstation clear when you have finished
- be aware that you may be monitored while you are using a computer or while accessing the Internet
- only use the Internet for careers, job search or course related work
- use your login for another student
- consume food or drink in the computer suites, Library or Learning Centres
- move equipment or disconnect cabling
- open .exe files
- alter settings
- load software
- send or receive pornographic material, computer viruses or offensive material which would contravene legislation / constitute a criminal offence
- use the Internet to hack into other internal or external computer systems
- connect your own computer equipment to the College network
Accidents
If there is an accident which causes injury, it is important that you take the correct actions. Summon assistance and wait with the casualty for a qualified First Aider or other authorised person. All accidents must be report to the lecturer in charge. Accidents outside the classroom must be reported to reception.Clothing / PPE / Team Colours
At all times clothing should be suitable and appropriate to the activity being undertaken. Where required, personal protective clothing and equipment (PPE) must be worn at all times. Football / team colours should not be worn in College.Children, Young People and Vulnerable Adults
The College operates a child protection policy in order to safeguard the welfare of the children, young people and vulnerable adults who attend the College. Members of staff have a duty of care to prevent physical, sexual or emotional abuse and to report any suspicions of abuse. A copy of the policy is available from the Head of Student Services.Children not be taken into a classroom / workshop / study area at any time; nor should prams or pushchairs be left unattended in corridors.
Conduct & Disciplinary Procedures
All students are expected to conduct themselves in an orderly manner and co-operate with any reasonable request by a member of College staff. By signing the College enrolment form, you agree to be bound by the Student Code of Conduct and the College rules and regulations.? Students who breach the College rules and regulations on conduct, Health & Safety or academic matters will be disciplined and may be suspended or withdrawn from their course of study. Students have the right of appeal. The following activities are strictly prohibited:- smoking on College premises or at entrance doors
- gambling in any form
- use or possession of intoxicating liquor, drugs or hazardous substances on College premises
- dropping of litter, spitting, theft, vandalism or violence
- interfering with fire equipment, fire doors or fire alarms
- wilful action which could place any person in danger or could result in an accident
- use of the Internet or Email to access, download or send offensive or pornographic material
- harassment, bullying, behaviour or language that is sectarian, sexist, racist, ageist or homophobic
- remaining in the building when a fire / evacuation siren has been sounded
Consumption of Food and Drink
Food and drink must not be consumed in classrooms, library, learning centres or computer labs. Packed lunches may be taken in the Student Common Room or Cafeterias.Fire
In case of fire follow the instructions on the fire notices. If the alarm sounds, everyong MUST leave the building by the marked exit route and only re-enter after an all-clear has been sounded.Harassment / Bullying
Harassment in any form, whether involving students or staff will not be tolerated in the College. A person may be harassed on the basis of sex, sexual orientation, race, religion, a disability, or other factors such as class or accent. It may take the form of bullying, ridicule, teasing, suggestive comments, touching or assaults. If you feel you are being harassed you should, if you feel able, approach the person who is harassing you, and ask them to stop the offending behaviour.If you feel you are unable to approach that person, or are unsuccessful, you should contact your Personal/Group tutor or the Head of Student Services. They will listen, give you support, and help you take the next step.
Bullying is a particular form of harassment, which can include, among other things, deliberate exclusion from groups. If you feel you are being bullied in any way, please speak to your Personal/Group Tutor immediately. The earlier things are sorted out the better. The person doing the bullying will not be punished initially, but will hopefully be persuaded that their behaviour is not acceptable and change it.
